February is Black History Month

The month of February is historically a time to recognize and celebrate Black history, culture, excellence and achievement in America. In 1978, President Gerald Ford decreed Black History Month (BHM) a national observance, serving as an opportunity to reaffirm and highlight the contribution and historical importance of Black people in the United States.

Throughout this month, the American Lung Association’s social channels will feature weekly posts about Black history facts and figures, lung health resources and more. A new page has been added to the ALA website to highlight Lung Association resources specifically for the Black community, like the brief documentary “Black Lives, Black Lungs” and information addressing the historic distrust of vaccine research and the U.S. medical system among Black Americans. We also have an upcoming webinar on lung cancer disparity in Black men. I encourage you to explore these resources at Lung.org/diversity and to share the branded digital assets we have created on social media (download them here).  REGISTER NOW

COVID-19 and Vaccines: Clinical Trials, Immunity and Immunization

The phrase “restrictions in place until we have a vaccine” has become a common closing statement when announcing social distancing measures. We all collectively hope for the creation of a vaccine to prevent the further spread of COVID-19. Join us as top experts review how to achieve active immunity, the science behind vaccine trials and current thoughts on how to mobilize resources for distribution once a vaccine exists.

COVID-19 and Mental Health: Spatial Distancing, not Social Distancing

The limiting of face-to-face contact with others has helped reduce the spread of the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19. Yet the physical distancing required to keep the virus at bay may invite unwanted emotions such as loneliness, anxiety and feelings of helplessness. Join us as top experts review coping strategies and techniques to manage your mental health while maintaining your physical health.

Air Quality and COVID-19: Connections, Health Impacts, and Racial Disparities

This webinar discusses the preliminary implications of findings that suggest higher death rates of COVID-19 in individuals who have faced long-term exposure to poor air quality (PM 2.5). It also focuses on the findings that communities of color, especially African Americans, are especially at risk from the health impacts of both air pollution and COVID-19. Speakers include researchers and experts from both the health and public policy perspectives working to understand and combat these synergistic health threats.

Demystifying Testing for COVID-19

There are two kinds of tests available for COVID-19; a viral test which tells you if you have a current infection while an antibody test tells you if you had a prior infection. Across the country, there are differences in how states are rolling out testing procedures, discrepancies in who has access to get tested and misinformation about what the test results mean. Join us as top experts review testing trends, what those results mean, and opportunities on the horizon.
